Commissioner Zachary Brown

Zak Brown is Chief Deputy Public Defender. He’s served in the Office of the Colorado State Public Defender for 11 years and previously worked as a lawyer in the Durango and Pueblo offices.

He specializes in issues affecting the rural criminal legal system and criminal jurisdiction issues in Indian Country. Born and raised in rural Colorado himself, he works to ensure the statewide system provides clients with the same high level of representation, whether they live in the Denver metro area or in a rural town such as Alamosa. 

He earned his undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Colorado and his law degree from the University of Colorado. He is also a member of the Pueblo Bar Association. 

When he’s not at work, he spends time with his family. He also enjoys hiking, playing tennis and watching sports.
